Middenbeemster

The Middenbeemster itself

More than 400 years ago, the Beemster was still a large lake, which was drained in 1612 by 43 polder mills, adding more than 7.200 hectares of land to the Netherlands. The Beemster has been on the World Heritage List since 1999. The municipality of Beemster has been dissolved and merged with the municipality of Purmerend since January 1, 2022. Within the Beemster you will not only find the Middenbeemster but also the villages of Noordbeemster, Westbeemster and Zuidoostbeemster. De Middenbeemster is the oldest of the four villages and is located between De Rijp, Purmerend and Noordbeemster.
