Purmerend itself
Purmerend is a city located in the Waterland region. In 1484, Purmerend was given market rights and each square had its own market destination: Cheese Market, Sheep Market, Fish Market and the Cow Market. Purmerend is still a nice city for shopping, as the city has many special shops but also an indoor shopping center with large well-known chains. After a day of shopping you can relax on one of the many cozy terraces in the city center of Purmerend. A delicious meal, a trendy drink spot or a fun night out? It's all possible here! On January 1, 2022, Purmerend merged with the municipality of Beemster, which also received the name Purmerend.

Facilities in Purmerend
Purmerend has no fewer than 30 primary schools and 5 secondary schools. The primary schools can be divided into: special education, Anthroposophical, Islamic, public, Roman Catholic. The city has three football clubs: FC Purmerend, VPV Purmerstijn and VV De Wherevogels. There is also a baseball club, a rugby club, a hockey club and an athletics club. This athletics association trains Olympic athletes. The rugby club in Purmerend plays premier class with both its men's and women's teams.
Purmerend is also a great shopping city, so you can enjoy indoor shopping in the Eggert Shopping Center when the weather is bad.

Accessibility of Purmerend
Purmerend is located on the Zaandam – Enkhuizen railway line and has three stations: Purmerend Weidevenne, Purmerend and Purmerend Overwhere. Purmerend is very easy to reach by car, as the city is located on the A7 that heads towards Zaandam, Hoorn, Den Oever and then continues across the Afsluitdijk to Friesland and Groningen.

Do you want to enjoy nature? That is also possible in Purmerend! Purmerend has several parks and nature reserves. For example, you can enjoy a lovely walk in the Purmerbos. Sights and excursions in Purmerend
Purmerend offers various options to go to a film or theater performance. In 2017, a cinema in the city was completely renovated. The Filmhuis Purmerend is also located in the city center. Theater de Purmaryn and Theater De Verbeelding are the most famous theaters in the city.
Purmerend has no clubs for going out, but it does have a wide range of cafes in and around the city center for an evening of entertainment. Not a going out type? There is a casino on the Gedempte Singelgracht and not much further away a cozy pool center. The old town hall is located on the Cheese Market in Purmerend, where the Purmerend Museum is now located.

Do you like swimming? The Spurd-Leeghwaterbad is a large swimming pool where you can enjoy recreational swimming, but also swim laps in the competition pool or take a seat in the sauna. Fun fact: from the reception you have an underwater view of the competition pool!
