The first traces of habitation in Heemskerk date from 600 to 300 years before the common era. Footprints and wells were found during excavations in 2004. Heemskerk is located on the North Sea coast between Haarlem and Alkmaar, a super central location right on the A9. Next to Heemskerk is the largest covered market in Europe, the Bazaar. The Bazaar is open at the weekend and is a really nice outing to spend an afternoon 'strolling'. There are various stalls selling clothing and cosmetics, food halls with fresh fruit and various spices and herbs, and a hall full of second-hand items.
Heemskerk is also a very nice city for children. For example, you can go indoor swimming at the Waterakkers swimming pool. The swimming pool is a favorite among children because of the giant slide and the whitewater rapids. The little ones have also been taken into consideration, so there is a paddling pool with a slide. The sunbathing lawn is open in the summer months, with an outdoor pool! Do you like swimming laps? Swimming pool De Waterakkers has a competition pool of 25 meters long and 6 lanes wide where you can swim laps.
Not only is the swimming pool highly recommended, many families also enjoy going to the Blij family restaurant. There is plenty to do here; from touchscreen play modules to a block box and a huge playing field with various play equipment. The children will have fun while you enjoy a cup of coffee or tea.
An educational outing? At the Dierendorp petting zoo you can learn all about pets and small farm animals in the education room. In the cuddle corner, children can sit among the guinea pigs and rabbits under supervision. The farm itself is home to pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, donkeys and various bird species.
Sports enthusiasts can enjoy themselves on the sports boulevard. Here you will find a dance studio, gym, swimming pool, riding school and various options for squash, tennis, volleyball, badminton, etc. Are you a golfer? The Heemskerkse Golf Club is located in the middle of the nature of Kennemerland. After playing golf you can relax on the terrace of Grand Café Restaurant 'de 19e', right next to the golf course.
Sauna enthusiasts can visit the Waterakkers sauna, the sauna has a Finnish sauna, eucalyptus sauna, color sauna, infrared cabin, herbal baths, cold water baths, sanarium, tecaldarium, Turkish steam bath, whirlpool, swimming pool with waterfall, roof terrace, sauna patio and a relaxation area.
