Alkmaar

Alkmaar: lively city where everyone is welcome

Alkmaar is a medium-sized, lively city in North Holland. The city, with more than 100.000 inhabitants, is known for its traditional cheese market. However, there is much more to experience. From the cozy city center and nice city parks to child-friendly residential areas and trendy apartments: Alkmaar has something for everyone.

The hotspots and hidden gems of Alkmaar
Alkmaar has a lot to offer. It is an attractive city both to visit and to live.

Well-known chains and small boutiques
You can shop to your heart's content in the city center of Alkmaar. On the two most famous shopping streets, the Langestraat and the Laat, you will find both large retail chains and small boutiques with unique clothing and products. While shopping you can enjoy home-made fries or ice cream, or a snack and drink at one of the cozy terraces at the Waag.

Just outside the center is the Overstad district. Here there is an extensive residential boulevard and, a little further on, a real thrift store. The ideal place to shop for your new interior. This district is in full development and not only offers nice shops, but also trendy and modern apartments. Maybe a beautiful penthouse is something for you?

Find peace in nature
There is plenty of nature to enjoy in and around Alkmaar. For example, the Alkmaarderhout, the oldest city park in the Netherlands. It has been around since 1607. You can walk straight to Stadsboerderij de Hout, a beautiful, spacious petting zoo. The Bolwerk, a city park right next to the city center, and the Rekerhout city park are also worth a visit.

A little further on is the Oudorperhout polder area, where you can admire meadow birds such as the lapwing and godwit among the meadows. And if you fancy a bike ride, you can easily reach the Geestmerambacht nature reserve, the Heilooërbos or the North Holland dune area. Nature is never far away from Alkmaar.

Activities and experiences
Alkmaar is also the right place for entertainment. Visit the various weekly markets to do your shopping. And how about the cheese market, which has been taking place in the city since 1365? It is definitely worth a visit.

Football fans pay attention, because the AZ stadium is located right on the ring road around the city. Other sports enthusiasts are also well catered for, including an indoor ice skating rink, cycling track and indoor climbing wall.

And if you like special events, then Alkmaar is also the place for you. In addition to the annual fair and King's Day festivities, Alkmaar has a unique event: the Kaeskopenfestival, where the city center is transformed into a 16th-century city for a few days.

Living in Alkmaar

The city of Alkmaar is divided into seven districts, each with their own character. Are you looking for a home in Alkmaar? Then be sure to visit the different neighborhoods to discover where you feel at home. As a local real estate agent, we know every neighborhood like the back of our hand. We would like to tell you more about our favorite neighborhoods.

Stately 30s homes
There are beautiful 30s homes in various Alkmaar neighborhoods. Perhaps the most beautiful ones can be found in the Emmakwartier and Nassaukwartier, where monumental buildings adorn the street scene. In the surrounding picturesque streets you will find cozy, smaller houses with characteristic details. Do you see yourself living in 30s style? We are happy to help you find your dream home.

Alkmaar Overdie
The Overdie district had a bad name for years. This is now no longer correct. Overdie is a pleasant neighborhood where cultures come together. From nice starter apartments to nice single-family homes, there is room for everyone here. So don't ignore this neighborhood in your search for a new home.

Alkmaar Huiswaard
Huiswaard is a district between the center and Alkmaar-Noord. The neighborhood is green and child-friendly, with all amenities close by. The Oudorper polder and Rekerhout city park are within walking distance for those looking for peace and quiet. The 70s homes offer plenty of space for families. Huiswaard is less known but certainly deserves attention.

Village tranquility near the city
Would you rather live just outside the city? Then take a look at the homes in Oudorp, Koedijk and Graft-de Rijp. Here you live in a quiet and spacious area, yet close to Alkmaar. Here too, we are happy to help you find your dream spot.
