The historic port city of Monnickendam is a city in the municipality of Waterland. When you drive into Monnickendam, you immediately notice De Grote or Sint-Nicolaaskerk. This church is the main church of the Dutch city of Monnickendam. The Gothic building is located on the Zarken, on the edge of the old city center. Together with Volendam and Marken, Monnickendam completes the triangle.

In Monnickendam you will find the 't Spil shopping center. Here you will find the necessary shops such as drugstores, supermarket, bakery, butcher, flower shop and greengrocer.

Do you like sports? You can join the Waterlandse Hockey Club or VV Monnickendan, the local football club.

In addition to various primary schools, Monnickendam also has a secondary education, the Bernard Nieuwentijt College.

Monnickendam is just a 20-minute drive from Amsterdam Central Station and 10 minutes from Volendam. Monnickendam is located on the N247 that goes towards Amsterdam and Hoorn. Every 5 minutes a bus runs along this road to Amsterdam. A bus also runs through Monnickendam itself.

Monnickendam has a beautiful, quiet nature and recreation area called the Hemmeland. The Hemmeland is a peninsula in the Gouwzee measuring 40 hectares.

A visit to Monnickendam also includes a visit to the Speeltoren museum, where you will learn all about the history of Monnickendam, travel through the reconstruction of the Waterland landscape and discover Monnickendam from the past.

A walk through the harbor of Monnickendam itself is an outing in itself, as Monnickendam is an enchanting city.

The Jan Haring Weekend is a party that no Monnickendammer misses. The weekend stands for fun, relaxation and entertainment for many Waterlanders, day trippers and tourists. It is therefore called by many the nicest weekend in Monnickendam. The Jan Haring Race once started as a notorious hard-driving race. The weekend is now known for singing, music and the eel smoking competition.

Marken is a beautiful peninsula located next to Monnickendam. The island can be reached via the dike or by ferry from Volendam. Enjoy the picturesque harbor and the characteristic green houses during a walk. There are several souvenir shops around the harbor that you can visit. On the walking route along Marken, the Paard van Marken lighthouse is located at the easternmost point. Feeling hungry after that brisk walk around Marken? In the harbor you can get a delicious fish from the fish stall!

Monnickendam is of course also a stone's throw from Volendam. Take a look at the famous Dijk and have your picture taken in Vollendammer costume.
