From iconic to monument

From iconic to monument

In this blog we will teach you more about the differences between the four designations for historic buildings. And what's really nice is that these buildings can also be admired in Alkmaar! And what are the designations for historic buildings, you might think? By historic buildings we mean: iconic building, protected city view, municipal monument or a national monument. Enjoy reading!

Impressive building

The municipality records the iconic buildings in the zoning plan. These buildings determine the appearance of the city or village and are important for the character and/or landscape. Did you know that Alkmaar has more than 4000 iconic buildings? These are mostly homes on the canal and homes or shops in the city center. Fun fact: you can recognize them by the green facade plaques. Want to know more about the facade shields? Then read this blog.

Protected city view

A protected city view is the national recognition of the cultural-historical value of an area. We also have this recognition in Alkmaar. And what exactly does this mean? Protected urban views include groups of immovable properties that are of general interest because of their beauty, mutual structural or spatial coherence or with a cultural-historical/scientific value. Alkmaar is an old city with many characteristic buildings that should remain that way. Does the government or other parties want to develop the area? Then the protected zoning plan and the strict requirements it contains are examined. Below you can see the protected city view of Alkmaar in red.

Municipal Monument

A monument is a special building that belongs to a village, city or landscape. A gem in a certain area! If we look at the monuments in Alkmaar, you will find national monuments, provincial monuments, municipal monuments and iconic buildings in our city. The municipality, province or the national government attaches importance to the building. In Alkmaar, 700 buildings may have the special status as municipal monuments. Well-known monuments are the Water Tower at Bergerweg 62, the former school building at Achter de Vest and the Regional Archives of Alkmaar. National monument

Did you know that Alkmaar has 578 national monuments? The Alkmaars Cheese Warehouse and the building of the old Vroom & Dreesmann store are two of these. Did you know that the entire canal belt in our city center with its 10 canals, 10 bridges and 2 locks are also national monuments? A national monument is a building that is of national importance due to its cultural-historical value and beauty. The national government protects national monuments with the aim of preserving their monumental value. National monuments fall under the Heritage Act.
