The Westbeemster itself
More than 400 years ago, the Beemster was still a large lake, which was drained in 1612 by 43 polder mills, adding more than 7.200 hectares of land to the Netherlands. The Beemster has been on the World Heritage List since 1999. The municipality of Beemster has been dissolved and merged with the municipality of Purmerend since January 1, 2022. Within the Beemster you will not only find the Westbeemster but also the villages of Noordbeemster, Middenbeemster and Zuidoostbeemster. The Westbeemster is located near Grootschermer and consists of a long road.

The Westbeemster is the smallest village in the Beemster and consists of a long road. In the village you will find a sports club, a basserie, a childcare center and many farms.
The Westbeemster is just fifteen minutes by bike from the Middenbeemster, where you will find a cozy village square with a supermarket, butcher, bakery and a nice restaurant.

For example, the A7 to Hoorn towards Leeuwarden and Zaandam/Amsterdam can be quickly reached and Purmerend with a railway station is also a short distance away. A bus line runs through the Beemster to and from Alkmaar and Purmerend with transfer options to Hoorn.
